Re-review: The Importance of Being Earnest, National Theatre

A return visit to The Importance of Being Earnest is a real festive treat at the National Theatre

“In matters of grave importance, style, not sincerity, is the vital thing”

It’s not so often that someone says to me ‘I’ve a got a spare ticket to something’, the shoe is most usually on the other foot there, so I was pleased to be even offered one this weekend, and thrilled to find out it was for the National Theatre’s The Importance of Being Earnest. I adored it first time around and the thought of getting to watch it again with a queer friend was too much for me to resist.

I’ve not too much more to add to my original review. It is the tiniest bit too long for the play that it is but Max Webster’s exuberant production makes a strong case for the joyous nature of his interventions. From the dragged up beginnings to the pageant stylings of the finale, we rarely see Oscar Wilde shaken up like this and it is an absolute joy to behold – plus there’s Sharon D Clarke bossing it as well.

Running time: 2 hours 45 minutes (with interval)

The Importance of Being Earnest is booking at the National Theatre until 25th January
