Not-really-a-re-review: Oedipus, Wyndham’s Theatre

I go back to the majesty that is Oedipus at the Wyndham’s Theatre

“Love is the only thing that matters in the end”

Having adored it first time around, I’d no thought of revisiting Robert Icke’s Oedipus – being that close to Lesley Manville too often might do you damage like looking directly into the sun! But having recommended it to so many people and hearing their raves, my barely-there resistance was worn down and I booked in again.

I’ve little more to add to that above-linked review, this really is as close to theatrical nirvana as it gets for me. Rob Icke’s distillation of Greek tragedy translates so easily to this contemporary setting, Manville and Mark Strong are scorchingly good in playing out the unknowingly self-destructive cycles, and June Watson delivers sensational work off the centre. Only weeks left not to miss out.

Running time: 2 hours (without interval)

Oedipus is booking at the Wyndham’s Theatre until 4th January
