Sondheim finally gets to play at the Sondheim
Almost designed as an early birthday present for me, a Stephen Sondheim gala, Old Friends, has been announced. Playing at the Sondheim theatre for one night only on the 3rd May, the show promises to bring together an extraordinary collection of West End and Broadway leading light in the name of remembering his musical theatre legacy.
The cast so far includes such luminaries as Michael Ball, Petula Clark, Dame Judi Dench, Daniel Evans, Bonnie Langford, Adrian Lester, Damian Lewis, Julia Mckenzie, Bernadette Peters, Elaine Paige, Clive Rowe, Imelda Staunton and Hannah Waddingham, with further names to be announced at a later date to complete a truly all-star cast.
Proceeds from the gala will go to the Stephen Sondheim Foundation, with proceeds used to support future playwrights, composers and lyricists.
